Bertone Runabout concept goes into small-scale production after 55 years

In 1969, the spectacular Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept car, created by the Bertone coachbuilder, was shown at the Turin Motor Show. It did not go into production in its original form, although it became the prototype for several iconic models at once. For the 55th anniversary of the concept, Bertone decided to correct the historical injustice and presented a modern car based on the original show car. And it will be a small-scale production!

The original Runabout (meaning “boat”) concept was designed by the late Marcello Gandini, who was working at Bertone at the time. It was one of the first cars to feature Gandini’s signature wedge-shaped styling, along with the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo concept. Another notable detail was the imitation of a boat’s ribbed bottom along the lower perimeter of the body. The lighting was unusual, with headlights at the bottom of the front end and additional spotlights mounted on the safety arc. Although it never made it to production, the Runabout nevertheless served as a source of inspiration for the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Stratos.

The modern Bertone Runabout carefully repeats its predecessor: both the wedge-shaped silhouette and many characteristic details, including the wheel arches protruding above the body, are reproduced. True, the extravagant lighting technology had to be abandoned due to obvious limitations for road cars. Instead, more practical and in their own way elegant pop-up headlights appeared. And the revived Runabout is also offered in two body types: barchetta (like the original concept) and a more practical targa with a full windshield and a removable roof panel.

The original concept was built on the chassis of the Autobianchi A112 compact car, although the 1.1-liter engine was moved from the front overhang behind the seats. The full technical specifications of the modern sports car have not yet been made public, but it is clear that it is equipped with a 500-horsepower V6 engine, which is also installed within the base. It is especially emphasized that, contrary to current trends, the Bertone Runabout is devoid of electric add-ons. A lightweight and lively chassis is also promised, giving pleasure behind the wheel. Judging by the available input, the car is based on the Lotus Elise, which has already been removed from the assembly line. This is indicated not only by the mid-engine layout and the presence of a V6 engine, but also by the characteristic windshield frame and rear-view mirror mounts.

According to the Bertone company, the new sports car will be the firstborn of the promising Classic family of models, which draw inspiration from the masterpieces of the past. The Bertone Runabout will be released in limited quantities, but the company has not yet announced the specific circulation. But the price is already known – 350 thousand euros. Small-scale production is scheduled to begin in 2026.
